Children Activities

Come to the children's area in the shadow of the WCHS on Johnson Street where there will be fun for children of all ages.

Activities will include:
Hula Hoop Contest at 3 pm.  The origin of the Hula hoop is unknown but it appeared around 3,000 years ago in Egypt and was reinvented by Richard Knerr and Arthur Medlin in 1952 owners of the Wham-O Toy Company.
 
Chapters from the
Nancy Drew Mystery, The Secret of the Old Clock, by Mildred A. Wirt will be read at 1pm and 4pm.  Released on April 28, 1930,  the book was released in a three book series:  The Secret of the Old Clock, The Hidden Staircase and the Bungalow Mystery.  In early books, Nancy often wore glamorous heels and fashionable clothing while chasing suspects, climbing ladders, and sleuthing for ghosts in secret passageways.  Nancy never takes money for  her detective work because she is a amateur detective.  Since 1930, Nancy Drew has solved over 500 cases.

Come and play or make
Play-Doh.  A non-toxic reusable modeling compound developed by Noah and Joseph McVicker and introduced by Rainbow Crafts of Cincinnati in 1956. It was only available in one color and one size, off-white and 1 1/2 pound can.

Can you solve the
Rubik' s Cube?  The Rubik's Cube was invented in 1974 by the Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Erno Rubik.  Originally called the Magic Cube by its inventor, it was renamed Rubik's Cube in 1980 by Michael Egnot and released worldwide in May of that year.  Come and test your skills

Play
Trivial Pursuit created in 1979 by Chris Haney and Scott Abbott in Montreal, Canada.  All started when there Scarbble game was missing pieces.

Barrel of Monkeys  created by Lakeside Toys in 1965.  Today it is produced by the Milton Bradley Company.

Lego table will be at the fair again.  Build a tall building.  Legos invented by Ole Kirk Christiansen in 1932.

Yo Yo Science
with be taught by Professor Erik Brom at 11 AM and 2 PM.  The first historical mention of the yo-yo was from Greece in the year 500 B.C.  The ancient toys were made out of wood, metal, or painted terra cotta disks and called a disc.  The yo-yo has traveled the world but in 1928 or 1929, a businessman named Donald F. Duncan Sr. Saw his first yo-yo while in San Francisco.  He saw the potential of the toy.  In 1932 he patented the trademark for the work "yo'yo".

Make and use Crayons.   Try your hand at the crayon machine.  Take old crayons and make new ones.  Then test them out and be creative on paper.  Crayons made there debut in 1903 with the Crayola brand.  The Crayola colors began in the late 1800's with the Binney & Smilth's red Oxide pigments that was used in making paint for an American Classic --The Classic Red Barn.  The Binney & Smith company develop and sold the slate school pencils.  For the St. Louis World Exposition the company introduces dustless chalk and wins the Gold medal for it.  With school as their test market and their main market they saw the need for affordable wax crayons. They make Crayons smaller and add colored pigments to paraffin wax.  .

One last toy
Etch A Sketch, see how it works and draw your ideas. Invented by Arthur Granjean in his garage in 1959.  He called it the L' Ecran Magique.  Ohio Art Company took the toy over and introduced it at the Etch A Sketch on July 12, 1960.
