Text Box: Steam Calliope

This Steam Calliope was made by Thomas J. Nichols, formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio, prior to the year 1920,  and has 32 whistles.  It has a boiler pressure of 100 pounds and is one of only seven playable steam calliopes in the country.  About 15 gallons of water are used on each tune or every ten minutes, so in one hour over 100 gallons of water are consumed.  The instrument has a range of two octaves and four notes, thus the selection of tunes is limited.  The top four notes are so shrill and shrieking they are seldom used.
